EMPLOYEE ARRIVAL INFORMATION & ASSISTANCE
Gwin's Lodge employees are encouraged to arrive and move into their designated employee housing about one week before commencing their training and work schedule. Our goal is to acclaimate the staff to the Kenai Peninsula area as well as to enjoy some of the complimentary fishing charters and outdoor recreation opportunities we will schedule for you. Employees are also encouraged to see the area on their own time. Through this approach, we hope to motivate our staff as well as familiarize them with the area to better assist our guests when they have questions on our area.
A limited number of employees will start work in mid April and May, before the peak summer season period commences in early June. A large portion of the staff will commence their training on June 6th so an arrival on or about May 31st is suggested.
Few folks coming to Alaska to work for the summer are afforded the opportunity to become an $11/Day, $13/Day or $15/Day tourist (depending upon your type of employee housing) with your housing, shower facilities, and employee cafeteria all covered by your room & board fee. By coming to Alaska and Gwin's Lodge ahead of your work schedule, you will commence your anticipated work - play experience with an enjoyable jump start. Further, limited work can be provided to cover your housing expenses while the new employee primarily spends their time touring the area. Conversely, those who elect to arrive just prior to their work schedule commencement, give up free fishing and outdoor recreation charters opportunities that are difficult to make up as the peak season starts with employees typically working a 5 day/week schedule. Nevertheless, since Gwin's represents a large number of outfitter companies, we receive a large volume of trips, enhanced by my standing assurance to our outfitters that we can respond and fill their short-notice seat vacancies, there will be a flow of employee trips throughout the summer season.

AIRLINE ARRIVAL INFORMATION
Anchorage International Airport is 100 miles north of Gwin's Lodge. There are two ground shuttle services between Anchorage International Airport and Homer, Alaska that provide two-way service and stop to drop-off at Gwin's Lodge. These ground shuttle services have only one trip per day so those flying in the afternoon or evening will need to stay in an Anchorage hotel overnight before catching the next day's shuttle. There is commuter plane service from Anchorage International to Kenai Airport located west of Gwin's Lodge for 50 miles. Unfortunately there is no ground transportation from this airport.
GROUND SHUTTLE SERVICES:
Homer Stage Line: (907) 235-2252
These companies, in the previous year, charged $40 for a one-way transport. The rates for 2003 are not known at this time.
AIRLINE RESERVATIONS
Airline reservations can be facilitated by use of an Alaskan based travel agency familiar with the best airfare rates and prompt service. Gwin's Lodge has recommended the use of this company for 2 years and does not receive any commission or compensation in any form. All we ask them to do is give our employees prompt and courteous service.

GROUND TRAVEL VIA THE ALASKA HIGHWAY
Employees who plan to drive from the Lower 48 to Alaska should ensure their vehicle is in good mechanical condition with spare tire and sleeping bags/blankets in case of breakdown between towns. Add 7 days to the Lower 48 travel necessary to reach the U.S. - Canadian border to finish their drive to Cooper Landing. It is approximately 2400 miles from the border. This provides a reasonable level of miles driven/per day to avoid fatigue and arrive safely. Employees are encouraged to contact lodge management to update their progress in reaching Cooper Landing. Key waypoints to consider calling are the border crossing; Dawson Creek,British Columbia; and Whitehorse, Yukon. Gas stations are often long distances apart and certainly are not open around-the-clock. By planning your driving times to ensure reaching refueling spots during business hours and avoiding passing up on refueling opportunities, you will avoid running out of gas.

Although we don't have surfing on the Kenai Peninsula, we do check the tide tables for planning clamming trips. Interested Gwin's employees go on trips to get razor clams (we grill clam "steaks" and make Linguinne & Clam Sauce!!!) and steam mussells to compliment, as "appetizers", the frequent Salmon, Halibut, & Clam Bakes we have during the summer. Every year we have the following fish grilling parties:
1. "Here They Come" Pre-Season Party (Early June) 2. "I Survived The 1st Red Salmon Onslaught" Party (After 4th of July) 3. "I Survived The 2nd Red Salmon Onslaught" Party (August 20th) 4. "I Survived The Summer" Party (Labor Day)

ON-PREMISES PAYCHECK CASHING
Gwin's Lodge Historic Log Roadhouse |
Gwin's Lodge employees can cash their bi-weekly paychecks at the lodge. Since the nearest banks are nearly 50 miles away, this is an important perk for employees who lack auto transportation and a service few other local businesses provide their employees. |
